HINGE HOUSE, Santa Fe, NM
The hinge house is a concept for a site in a cul-de-sac upon which a mandatory turning circle eats up a good chunk of the developable land. It is named for the two wings, dedicated respectively to sleeping and waking, that hinge scissor-like around the circle’s perimeter. Fortuitously the result is a passive solar orientation of the house with a courtyard between the splayed wings.
